I am hoping this could be my miracle cure for acne since everything else has failed.

Before you try blue light I think you should know that it’s best to combine it with other treatments, since research has shown that it can diminish up to 60 percent of acne. But if you combine it with something that diminishes the other 40 percent than you can get control over it. This is from an article that will tell you more, hope it helps:

"Blue light therapy for acne can reduce up to 60 percent (!!) of your acne. That’s a fact that has already been scientifically proven. If you combine blue light therapy with traditional treatments, such as prescription creams and antibiotics, you can keep your acne completely under control. The best thing about it is that it’s a natural treatment that basically kills Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), the bacterium that causes acne inflammation. It’s also completely painless.

New technology devices combine blue light with red light – Which If you combine the blue lights that kill bacteria with red lights, which help reduce inflammation and improve healing.

These therapies can also improve skin texture and lessen the appearance of scars, so they may be good treatment choices for people with both active acne and acne scars.

How Does Blue Light Therapy Work and is it Proven Scientifically?

To put it simply, it has been proven that blue light therapy for acne – in the 405nm-420nm spectrum – actually kills Propionibacterium Acnes (P. acnes) bacteria. P. acnes bacteria create tiny molecules called porphryins. When porphyrins are exposed to blue light they produce free radicals that kill the bacteria that cause inflammatory acne. It sounds quite complex, but it’s a wonderfully simple solution.

In 2000 an independent research study performed by the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital in London determined “We have found that photo therapy with mixed blue-red light, probably by combining antibacterial and anti-inflammatory actions, is an effective means of treating acne vulgaris of mid to moderate severity, with no significant short-term adverse effects”. (Data from Pubmed.gov)

Remember: P. acnes multiply very fast, so ongoing treatment is necessary for best results.

What are your thoughts an opinions on the Baby Quasar Blue Light?
An should I ditch Retin-a for this Blue Light system?
Thanks guys

The Baby Quasar is a good product if you are treating very small areas, as the head of the product is very small itself. So if you have acne in multiple places on your face or body, it will take a very long time to treat each individual spot.

Instead, we highly recommend the BlueMD by Trophy Skin – http://www.trophyskin.com

This is a much more powerful home use device, its cheaper, and its hands free. That means you can cover the entire face in one session, without having to hold it or move it around. Plus it has both red and blue light, the combination light has been proven to reduce acne a lot faster. And the red light helps to heal acne scars as well.

Hope that helps!

yes you can and as for trying to get rid of the acne I suggest using proactive or a deep facial cleanser. Most everyone gets acne so if they weren’t going to hire people with acne there wouldnt be too many models out there so just use makeup to cover it up! Hope i helped!

I was wondering if the blue light acne treatment works well for moderately severe acne. My face usually gets better during the summer when I’m in the sun a lot so does this mean this will act like the sun and exfoliate all the bacteria and oils?
I have heard that this treatment does make it worse for some people

If you have exhausted all of the conservative topical therapies for acne, then blue light is an option. There is good research buttressing its benefits on clearing acne lesions. It kills bacteria, but your oil production most likely stays the same.

If you have severe recalcitrant acne, then isotretinoin is an option if your blood work comes out clean.

As long as you wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater every day and reapply every 2 hours for optimal photoprotection, there is no need to worry.

How would Red and Blue LED light therapy work on acne, if it’s set to 415 nm blue and 660 nm red? Moderate to severe acne.

Acne light treatments – a form of "chromotherapy" have become very popular in recent years as alternatives to topical medications. The problem with these medications is that some individuals may have adverse reactions to them. Some people may have allergies to certain chemical treatments, and other people may have special conditions such as acne pregnancy, which would preclude the use of a wide variety of treatments.

Acne blue light therapy is one of the chromotherapies that has been shown to be very effective as an alternative to these medications. This type of acne light treatment attacks the bacteria known as "P. Acnes" which causes acne redness, irritation and inflammation. It is mainly used in cases of mild to moderate infection. Since P. Acnes is known to multiply rapidly, acne blue light therapy should be taken numerous times – normally once a week for one to two months should be sufficient, depending on the severity of the outbreak.

In addition to avoiding the problems normally associated with standard medications, acne blue light therapy has other advantages. First, the treatment only acts to kill the bacteria and has no other side effects on normal skin. Second, the treatment can penetrate to the underlying bacteria infection without harming the surface skin. A possible drawback to the treatment is the claim by some experts that long term use of acne light therapy can age the skin. This potential negative side effect, however, is unproven.

It is recommended that acne blue light therapy be administered by a qualified dermatologist. However, for those on a limited budget, there are companies that can provide the equipment for purchase and home use. For treatment of scarring caused by more severe or persistent cases, you will probably need to look to a stronger remedy, such as laser acne treatment. Consult your doctor in such case…….

I’m thinking about buying this light box and it says it has 405 nm of blue light and 660 nm of red light. that can both be turned on at the same time. How would this work for moderate/Severe acne?

Maybe, but many of the home systems do not produce enough light to be effective. Most of the systems used in dermatology offices are very high powered. But the wavelengths of light in that light box are right for treating acne.

does it reallllly work for acne?? like seriously…lets say you have TERRIBLE acne…hu hu hu? lol.
embarrasing question, but yeah, i need help..

I have bad acne. Didn’t work at all for me. I think it works for people with mild acne, but if you’ve tried other prescription methods with a dermatologist and everything and that is not working, I doubt the blue light will work for you. It’s not a very drastic procedure and you will not have drastic results.
